Forest and Sea and the Place Between EXHIBITION March 26 to April 18, 2019

Articulation has a new exhibition upcoming at the Portals Gallery in Duncan BC.
Six Articulation members were inspired by the Salish Sea. Sidney Spit welcomed us at low tide and we all had the opportunity to breathe in the luxury of salted air and sunshine on our creative journey of discovery. Each of us experienced learning, examining, ruminating and filtering our thoughts and reflections through our uniquely individual perspectives.

Here are some photos from our study session week in September 2017 to Sidney:
on the Spit and at the aquarium.

BRIDGING WATERS in Saint John, NB

The opening was Friday night and was well attended with people anxious to see a fibre exhibition.

Congrats to ReBecca Paterson, our east coaster, for getting the show hung and presiding at the opening. The Frazee Gallery is in an original Carnegie Library building - what a lovely setting.

Some photos she sent of the night...

Articulated Materials: Bridging Waters

Finally the opening of our first Canadian showing of the exhibit that toured England in 2012! And it is so much more... as we have been able to add pieces to it.

The show opens at THE CRE8ERY GALLERY in Winnipeg, Manitoba today, May 10th.

The name Articulated Materials is from the name of the two groups: ARTICULATION, the Canadian art group represented by fibre artists from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and New Brunswick; and MATERIAL GIRLS, the British fibre art group based around London UK.

Bridging Waters refers to the two iconic bodies of waters that each group studied in their own country: the Thames River and the Bay of Fundy.

Here is the poster I designed using an image of Ingrid Lincoln's work.

IF you are attending the Embroiderers' Association of Canada national conference called "Seminar 2013" (40th anniversary) then take in this show as part of the gallery tours.

We have two other galleries booked for this exhibit in 2013 in British Columbia and New Brunswick...

Women of Fibre, at the Whyte

As you walk into the gallery, this is what you see...

The museum director, Michale Lang and the curator, Mary Beth Laviolette did a wonderful job pairing and arranging artifacts and archives from the Whyte Collection to go along with Articulation's art works.

Catherine Whyte's engagement dress, shoes and portrait inspired Ingrid Lincoln.

Right - Burgess Shale fossils inspired Donna Clement; central - Mary Vaux's photographs inspired Wendy Klotz into making felted hats; left - Mary Shaffer's jacket inspired a response piece from everyone.

And Lesley Turner has an installation based upon women's work being unaccounted for and largely unnoticed in society.

Current Exhibition

Here is the official notice for the show that opens tomorrow. If you happen to be in the Victoria area, pop in and see the 60 pieces of art.

I will be there from September 4th through the closing on the 10th on doing workshops, tours, and demos.

The Victoria College Of Art - Textile Exhibition by Articulation

NARRATIVE ARTICULATIONS is a show of cross-Canada work by nine Canadian contemporary textile artists, all City and Guilds of London Institute trained. Each year the group, Articulation, goes to a special place in Canada to do a study together, then they return to their respective studios across Canada to produce a body of work based on the study. The next year they exhibit the work. Articulation has had two residencies at the Banff Center, Banff, Alberta. They are currently working on a body of work to be exhibited in the Whyte Museum, Banff, in September 2011.

Curated by Lesley Turner, the Victoria College of Art - Fine Art Textiles instructor, the free exhibition will fill the walls at the college with over 50 textile-based works. The artists will be in attendance during the opening reception, tours, demonstrations and workshops throughout the course of the show, which will run from August 27th to September 10th.

Opening reception will be held Friday, Aug 27th at 6:30 pm at the Victoria College of Art, at 1625 Bank Street.

On Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th August and Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th September there will be artist-led tours at 1 pm and 3 pm and demonstrations/workshops from 2 to 3 pm.
All events are free.

For more information, email info@vca.ca or call the school at 250-598-5422.

New show hanging at Nectar Desserts

Nancy Dormer and I spent Friday morning hanging our second show together at the funky little dessert bar Nectar in historical Inglewood just east of downtown Calgary. It looks great (of course!) and very colourful.

Called "Seemingly Simple" the description goes as so... "Does everything need to be complicated? Fruit is one of the basics of a healthy life. The design of a kimono appears uncomplicated and pleasing to the eye. Travelling to far off lands can be summed up in one memorable image. A complicated architectural design is compiled of many uncomplicated segments."

Nancy will be displaying her wonderful acrylic and mixed media artwork using techniques she has been experimenting with over the last year (and building on over the last few decades!) Using hand carved stamps, hand painted papers and original drawings her pieces are colourful and appealing. Her titles Caw, Sasha, Be, Soar, Fly, Play, the Mod Ladies, and Brown Crow look forward to your visit.

I have incorporated into my art pieces embroidery on paper, darning with yarns, hand dyed fabrics, embossed metal, and much more. With titles like Castles in the Rockies, The Cedar Remains, Buried Treasure, Standing Stones of Scotland, Stone Age Art of Sweden, and Silver Fern of New Zealand, they cover a large range of subjects and a huge variety of techniques.

Sunfest, Inglewood's annual street festival, will occur on Saturday August 1st, and will feature 3 full blocks of happenings - a good day to explore the area. Nectar is closed Sunday and Monday for the Heritage Day holiday but reopens Monday to Thursday from 3 to 11 pm, Friday and Saturdays from 10 am to midnight, and Sundays 10 am to 5 pm.

Nancy and I will also be hosting an artist reception on Wednesday, August 19th - more about that later.

McMullen Gallery Artist Reception

April 24th saw Lesley Turner and I returning to Edmonton for a busy day in the gallery. After teaching a workshop in contemporary darning in the afternoon, we then hosted an information session for gallery staff over dinner, and then the artist reception in the evening. The gallery filled up and a steady crowd kept us busy all evening. Many acquaintences from my childhood days in Sherwood Park attended and it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to catch up. We explained our art and the UNESCO theme and had people pinning a world map of heritage sites they had visited, and fillling out a form letter nominating their favourite special places in Canada to be included into the UNESCO family. An eventful day all around!
