Connected Heritage

(I missed an entire exhibit!!)

Connected Heritage
by Articulation Textile Group

The question is often asked: How does an exhibition come into existence?  In this case it is the result of the combined efforts of a group of artists who have exhibited throughout Canada and England since 2004.

The group, Articulation, visited Gimli and the surrounding area in 2017. They explored the Interlake landscape and cultural connections specific to the region.

Inspired by the heritage of this unique destination, members expressed their personal responses in textiles using thread, paint, and mixed media. These works explore the culture and landscape of the region and make connections between this region in the the heart of Canada and the diversity of the Canadian peoples.

The New Iceland Heritage Museum agreed to display this body of work. We are grateful for their participation in this project.

BRIDGING WATERS in Saint John, NB

The opening was Friday night and was well attended with people anxious to see a fibre exhibition.

Congrats to ReBecca Paterson, our east coaster, for getting the show hung and presiding at the opening. The Frazee Gallery is in an original Carnegie Library building - what a lovely setting.

Some photos she sent of the night...

BRIDGING WATERS in Sidney BC

The show in Sidney was in the Tulista Gallery along the seawall walk. This provided a steady stream of people coming through ready to look at the latest show on display and become engaged in the works.

Inside the door...

Wendy Klotz's piece was one of the first seen when entering the gallery. "Lost At Sea" is about the statistic that a Nova Scotian fisherman is more than 19 times as likely to die on the job than any other occupation. She has knit 19 fish that are found offshore - cod, halibut, and haddock.

Barb McCaffery made a series on bivalve shells found as fossils and still today onshore...

Ingrid Lincoln explored Cape d'Or - a windswept corner with a lighthouse protecting sailors from rocky outcrops below...

Lesley Turner's "Postcards From Fundy", looking at the history of human settlement as represented through the textiles they wore and used in various time periods...

Two of my pieces using free-motion embroidery over tissue paper. The first represents the iconic sight from Hopewell Rocks; and the second is a boat in drydock awaiting repairs from the ever present elements of the sea and saltwater.

Articulated Materials: Bridging Waters

This show is getting around! After being in southern England in 2012 for three exhibits, the travelling show is now on its second Canadian leg.

Articulated Materials: Bridging Waters is opening in Sidney BC (conveniently located by the Victoria airport and mainland Ferry terminal) at The Arts Centre at Tulista Park.

The show has Articulation's work based upon the Bay of Fundy, and Material Girls' work based upon the River Thames.

Articulation travelled to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the fall of 2010 and spent a week studying locales including the seaside towns of St. Andrews, St. Martins, St. Stephens; walking tours of Saint John and Fredericton; self-directed walks down to The Hopewell Rocks; to the UNESCO site of Joggins Fossil Cliffs; the lighthouse at Cape d'Or; and the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro.

This is our resulting work... AND I will be at the gallery on September 3rd and 4th. Drop by for a visit if you are in the neighbourhood!

As you can see by the schedule along the right side, the next show will be in the Maritimes, in Saint John NB.

Articulated Materials: Bridging Waters

Finally the opening of our first Canadian showing of the exhibit that toured England in 2012! And it is so much more... as we have been able to add pieces to it.

The show opens at THE CRE8ERY GALLERY in Winnipeg, Manitoba today, May 10th.

The name Articulated Materials is from the name of the two groups: ARTICULATION, the Canadian art group represented by fibre artists from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and New Brunswick; and MATERIAL GIRLS, the British fibre art group based around London UK.

Bridging Waters refers to the two iconic bodies of waters that each group studied in their own country: the Thames River and the Bay of Fundy.

Here is the poster I designed using an image of Ingrid Lincoln's work.

IF you are attending the Embroiderers' Association of Canada national conference called "Seminar 2013" (40th anniversary) then take in this show as part of the gallery tours.

We have two other galleries booked for this exhibit in 2013 in British Columbia and New Brunswick...

Page-a-Day Journal for 2011

A friend of mine brought to my attention Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord's blog. More specifically, her video on a Word-A-Day Journal 2011. These books were just too cute not to dive into and make a collection of my own.

The books are made of five signatures, each completed one measuring 2" by 3". They are bound by months, so there are 12 of them in total, with ~30 pages each. She originally made them as a word-a-day journal, but I think I will be using them more as a work and life journal for this year 2011.

I had to travel midway through this month, which involved a 10-hour day in airports (just to get across Canada!), so I went through my collection of painted papers and cut 60 pages to size in a colour wheel assortment. On the plane I was folding and glueing. Once I got home, I added the covers...

And then made a box to keep them in, which measures 5" x 3" x 2".

Because I have used such a variety of papers, I will have to experiment with a variety of pens to write on the pages - that will be part of the fun!

Calyx Art Exhibition

CALYX Art Exhibition and Sale was started 10 years ago by four Alberta College of Art and Design graduates. It has grown so much in the past 10 years that they now run it twice a year (April and October) and have ~25 different artists each day.

This year it runs:
Saturday October 17 and Sunday October 18, 2009
10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Crescent Heights Community Centre
1101 2nd Street NW, Calgary, AB

and I will be participating on Sunday the 18th.

I will have a wide variety of art offerings this year - from wall pieces based upon UNESCO sites in Canada to summer fruits. I also have my Keepsake Pouch necklaces (over 3000 individual stitches in making the pouch, decorated with beads and metal findings, then filled with semi-precious stones listing their spiritual properties.) I have a few brooches and small frames pieces and, new this year, Devore Silk Scarves in many different colours and patterns.

I attended the artist meeting the other night and I got a preview of all the wonderful artists and their work that will be offered in this year's sale.

On Sunday with me will be:
Michelle Wilman and her handmade beads made into jewellery
Heather Brewster with her newest venture into assemblages
Lisa Brawn whose work was on flags on the bridges over the Bow River this summer
raku from Linda Mosher
basketry in metal from Crys Harse
fine woodwork from Kathy Somerville
and the painters;
Eleanor Lowden Pidgeon
Connie Geerts
Angie Rees - funky versions of dreams
Kathy Lycka
plus 15 others!!!

Banff Centre for the Arts residency

February has zipped by and now I am days away from heading to Banff for the entire month of March - just imagine - packing for a month! The clothes are nothing - it's the supplies! How to take enough of everything so that you don't run out of projects to work on?

Of the entire Articulation group, there will be eight of us heading to the mountains for a month long retreat with people coming and going over the 4 and 1/2 weeks. Good news is that we have got use of the visual art facilities for two of those weeks and can dye fabrics and thread, and then print, silk screen and stamp for another layer.

I will be attending for the entire 31 days and look forward to the mountain air and group bonding. I plan to dye silk banners + overdye cottons and wools + stamp motifs for WOMEN ROCK (Banff study) and URBAN TEXTURES (Winnipeg study). I am sure I won't run out of things to do!

Here is a photo from last year's residency at the same Leighton Artists' Colony, at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Banff, Canada. Exciting times ahead!

Quote for the day...

I get great satisfaction in creating a visual oasis to gaze at for a moment of peaceful escape from the turbulent world.

Saskatchewan Prairies, Farmers and Wheatfields

Articulation is heading to Saskatchewan for its yearly study session and annual AGM. Each year we gather from across the country (British Columbia to New Brunswick) for one week to study a Canadian ecosystem and produce a future exhibition based upon our photographs, sketches, on-site and remote research, and resulting original designs done by each of us.

Initial brainstorming to jump start the creativity includes....
farming
machinery
buildings
grains
crops/fields
wild flowers/ grasses
animals
open skies

For more info on the Prairie ecosystem, check out the Canadian Diversity Web Site hosted by McGill University at:
canadianbiodiversity.mcgill.ca/english/ecozones/prairies/prairies

And the "Prairie Sky" was voted one of the Seven Wonders of Canada.
www.cbc.ca/sevenwonders/wonder_prairie_skies
Watch the film on this CBC page to see some awesome skies in various seasons, at sunset, and during storms.

So, this blog will be quiet for the next little while as I attempt to get a start on our latest topic for study.

Previous topics and places we visited for the Articulation group include:
2004 - Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta - we created an exhibition on the Canadian Badlands.
2005 - Cold Lake, Alberta to study northern lights and ice formations - this became the basis of our exhibition on Martin Frobisher and his quest for the NW passage which was shown in Calgary and Banff, Alberta and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
2006 - Winnipeg, Manitoba - we are currently working on upcoming shows with designs based upon the architecture of the heritage buildings in the downtown area.
2007 - Vancouver Island, British Columbia - we are currently working on an upcoming show on the rainforest ecosystem of the Pacific NW.
2008 - Regina, Saskatchewan - Prairie landscapes.

The Articulation textile art group is made of Canadian 'City and Guild of London' classmates Miriam Birkenthal, Donna Clement, Leann Clifford, Gloria Daly, Wendy Klotz, Ingrid Lincoln, Linda MacKay, Vickie Newington, ReBecca Paterson, and Lesley Turner.

Books, Movies, and Music

I have added a new feature on the right hand side of this page sharing some of the books that I read (usually 60 a year), the movies I go to (during my birthday month I try to go to one a day! and most often they are of the art house variety), and music I listen to (very eclectic and varied in itself) hoping to expose you to new artists and their offerings. The world is so full of people making beautiful art, in whatever their chosen medium!
